My pet is lost...what should I do?

When your pet turns up missing it is upsetting, but don't panic! Chances are good your pet is fine and not far from home. Check around your neighborhood and with your neighbors. They may have seen your pet or may have your pet in safe keeping.

If your pet can still not be located, you should do the following...

If your pet was lost in the city of Marinette you can call the Marinette Police Department at 715-732-5200. They may have found your pet. If your pet was lost anywhere else you can call the Menominee Animal Shelter at 906-864-PAWS (7297). If someone has found your pet, they may have taken your pet to the shelter for safe keeping.

Reguardless of who may have your pet, if your pet has been micro chipped and you took the extra step to register your pet, we will know who to call when your pet is found. Our clinic, the Police Department and the Shelter all have scanners and all of us scan all lost pets for ID chips.

I have found a lost pet...now what?

Chances are the owners are looking for their lost pet and the pet is more than likely not far from home. Be patient the owner may come looking for their pet.

If not...

First check to see if the pet has any identification tags on their collar. If there is a phone number, call the pets owner, they will be relieved and happy to come and pick up their pet. If you only find a rabies tag, you can call the veterinary clinic on the tag. However, the veterinary clinic would only be able to help you locate the owner during regular office hours.

Second check to see if the pet has a tattoo, that's right, many owners have their phone number tattooed in the pets ears or on their tummy.

If no identification can be found, following is the procedure you would need to take.

If you have found a pet in the City of Marinette, call the Marinette Police Department. They have an animal control officer who can help you. The pet can be scanned for an identification chip. If a chip is detected and the owner has registered their pet, the officer will know who the owner is. If no chip is detected the animal will be impounded until the owners can be found.

If you have found a pet anywhere else, the lost pet can be brought to the Menominee Animal Shelter. Like the police department the Shelter has a scanner and very possibly will be able to return the lost pet to the rightful owner.
